Artifact 1: Advanced Health Prezi
Rationale:
I have always taught 6-12th grade health which includes pretty basic health information. This year I was asked to teach an advanced health class where many of my students selected independent health topics to study (ex= OBGYN, Sports Medicine, Mental Health). With just a basic health degree this meant that I had to educate myself on some of the more detailed topics, as well as create a variety of resources, activities and assessments for each of them. All of this work shows how I can deepen my knowledge, expand my skills and also put new findings into practice. This particular project, described in the Prezi, was one that I chose to improve on during EDU 743- Connecting Reading & Writing. The information and ideas I gathered from that class allowed me to make this project more effective to my student's learning. |

Reflection:
I chose this Prezi to share because I am very proud of the changes I made to this project due to the learning experiences I had in EDU 743. Proposition 4 states the importance of NBCT's to model what an educated person is. This project shows my students that I have learned a lot and can implement it into my classroom. It also shows my willingness to deepen knowledge, as I am allowing students a great deal of choice in this project. With the choice means that I must be knowledgeable about what they chose to use for visual methods or the book, song or video they chose to examine. Everyday there are new ideas and practices being introduced in the education world. It is important that I keep up with these and whenever possible make adjustments to my lessons and projects. |
Artifact 2: Academic Word Wall
Rationale:
This poster, about how to use Academic Word Walls in a classroom, was created for EDU 742. I have selected it to represent Proposition 4 because it shows my ability to model what an educated person is. This vocabulary strategy was one I had not used in my classroom until I read about it in EDU 742. I thought it would be a great way to improve my students health vocabulary so I learned about the strategy, then created this poster which explained why word walls are important in a classroom, and provided a way to use it in health class. This vocabulary strategy is also a new instructional strategy for me, which shows I am able to stay abreast of current or new strategies and shows my ability to change the way I do things. |

Reflection:
As I reflect on my classes at UNE, I am thankful for all of the literacy strategies I was able to learn. I found this word wall to be one strategy that would surely help my students when it comes to understanding health topics. I had always created a word wall bulletin board, but had not thought to engage the students in it. This word wall poster shows my ability to learn a new strategy, examine it, and then put it into practice. Since I was able to give examples of how to use it in health class, it will be much easier for me to incorporate this strategy into my curriculum. I am thankful for my willingness and UNE's ability to stay updated on current education strategies. It surely will make for a more successful health class for all my students. |
