Welcome to my portfolio. My name is Kristy Staples and I currently teach 6-12th grade health in Dexter, ME. I have the joy of teaching at two schools everyday, Ridge View Community School (PreK-8) and Dexter Regional High School (9-12). It makes for a very busy schedule but I love the fact that I have my students for four or more years.
I graduated in 2006 from the University of Maine at Farmington with a Bachelor's degree in Secondary Education-Social Studies Concentration. Upon graduation I applied for a social studies job in my hometown. The job was offered to an in house person and when the Principal called to tell me I had not received the position, he offered me the health job. I was not certified in health so I had the next two years to obtain that degree. Thanks to the University of Maine system I was able to obtain that certificate with all online classes. Due to that experience with online learning, I decided in 2013 to begin working towards my Master's Degree with the University of New England's online program. It has been such a rewarding experience and I have thoroughly enjoyed how much this program has helped me grow as a teacher. If you'd like to read more about my teaching philosophy please view my mission/philosophy page.
I also take great pride in the other positions I hold at Dexter. I am the Community Coordinator for the high school where my largest task is to organize Open House. I am a member of the High School's Leadership Team, a member of the Standards-Based Grading Committee and an Advisor. I also coach Junior Varsity field hockey and still find time to be Co-President of our local teacher's association.
In my spare time I enjoy anything sports related, traveling all over the United States with my husband and hanging out with my family and friends. I recently have started to learn to quilt and look forward to my first finished product.

The above picture is of myself and a student who actually inspired me. I had him from 7th grade until he graduated. I worked extremely hard with him his senior year to make sure he completed his high school requirements. He was not able to march with his class but I had the honor to present him his diploma on the last student day of that year. Sometimes a student just needs to know you care in order to show their full potential :)
